Interior
Design - Overview
|
|
 |
| Over
the millennia, as man has slowly evolved from an outdoor
hunter gather into an indoor settler, the understanding
of spaces for habitation has become more and more complex
and demanding. The earliest signs of his interest in
creating personalized indoor spaces can be seen as long
back to B.C. as cave paintings in the west. Ever since,
there has been a need to understand his complex need
for safe shelter combined with an intrinsic drive for
wild explorations. Adding to this primary need is the
additional demand of creating harmony between space
functionality and aesthetics came into force.
At
SFIAD you will discover such opportunities to lean on
these principles in theory and master them through practice.
|
|
|
Developing skills in manipulating line, form, space, volume
and proportion to effectively communicate in a visual format
are its main thrust. You will discover the essence of functionality,
safety and quality of interior spaces, with a special focus
on understanding the key differences between private homes,
public buildings and business or institutional facilities.
All with the help of cutting edge design technology.

| Dissertation |
| The
aim of this module is to enable students to explore
a subject of interest to them, and to further develop
research skills, thinking/ analytical skills and writing
ability. This module provides a formal framework within
which students may demonstrate their ability to independently
conduct detailed research, and then present a knowledgeable
and informed argument based on their findings. Students
should note that their chosen subject is not necessarily
limited to interior design, but should be related to
art and design |
| Methodology |
The
purpose of this module is to provide a formal framework
within which students may structure their individual
approach to each interior design project and to the
course as a whole. By meticulously planning and documenting
each aspect of their progress, students will be able
to critically evaluate their own method of working and
manage time more effectively. This method of record
keeping is also an important way in which to establish
authorship of work, both on this program and in professional
practice.

Final
Major Dissertation Project (MDID)
Writing
a dissertation is a lot like writing a book. It is, by definition,
a self-directed process. There are usually no weekly deadlines
from professors, no regular discussions with classmates, no
reading assignments, no drawing assignments, no one telling
the student what to do—he/she is on his/her own, writing/drawing
something longer than he/she have ever written/drawn, and
doing it without a net. This independence can make the process
seem very intimidating
|
|
|
This
is a vital characteristic of professional Interior Designers
that the various types of skills and knowledge are tightly
integrated and applied holistically. In fact, Interior design
sills only have real meaning and value when they are applied
in this way. In this final module of the MDID program, students
will conduct focused research in a specialized area of interior
design and produce a report presenting their conclusions.
Students will then be required it integrate their findings
with core interior design skills and apply them in the in
the development of this project, thereby demonstrating a holistic
approach it designing interior environments that positively
impact the quality of people’s lives. This is a self-generated
project that enables students to pursue a specialist area
of their own choice. In completing this project, students
will be required to produce the necessary drawings, documentation
and presentation aids to an extremely high professional standard
and the entire design process and methodology must be meticulously
documented. On successful completion of this module, students
will demonstrate mastery in a specialized area of interior
design and this will provide them with the skills and knowledge
to position them competitively in dynamic market place.

Final Thesis/Dissertation Project
|
|
It
may sound silly, but a major part of the dissertation
drawing/writing a dissertation is simply having the
will to Draw/write it—making him/her to do it,
even when student don't want to. The dissertation is
a marathon, not a sprint, and it will take endurance,
determination, and perseverance. Developing and sustaining
the will to complete a complicated, long-term project
is a habit that will serve them well in other areas
of life.
|
|
The
aim of this module is to build on prior knowledge and
design skills gained by students, so they can generate
practical and innovative design solutions and can manage
a project from inception to completion. This is a self-project
that enables students to pursue a specialist area of
their own choice. And to demonstrate that they have
reached maturity by making key decisions and justifying
those decisions with sound reasons. Students will be
required to set their own schedule for completing various
key stages of this project, and in doing so they will
demonstrate highly resolved interior design ability
coupled with discipline to manage projects and complete
work to deadlines. This project is an appropriate preparation
for entry to the professional interior design industry
where DID students will be required to work autonomously
and independently with the field.

This
module provides a framework in which students will explore
how the human brain interprets visual information, assessing
the practical applications in residential & commercial
interior design. Students will learn traditional and contemporary
presentation techniques to visually communication their design
ideas at different levels of design development to various
audiences, and on successful completion of this module, students
will demonstrate the skill and ability to prepare informed,
persuasive and highly professional design presentations

Professional
Design Practice
|
In
this module, students are required to demonstrate an analytical
and methodical approach to the process of developing, programming
and implementing design solutions. Students must research
and comply with all legal and ethical restrictions relevant
to them, and students are expected to demonstrate a high professional
standard of organizational and time management skills, and
the ability to price their services competitively

Dissertation
|
To
this point, a student has been, more or less, an extension
of your earlier life as a student. Many people, in fact, go
to colleges because they have always been "good at college,"
and want to continue with something that brings them success
and self-confidence. The reading assignments, drawings, papers,
and tests they have been assigned as a student may not have
been so different from their undergraduate course work. The
dissertation, on the other hand, is a new kind of academic
project, unlike anything else they've done. It is the academic
project that marks their transition from student to scholar.

Dissertation Project (PGDID)

While
they embark on this, independent project, they may begin to
ask themselves questions about his/her future in academic
world. After all, the dissertation is the beginning of the
end of a career choice. When student finish his/her dissertation,
they have to change their life pretty dramatically —they
may go on the job market, begin work as an independent leader,
develop professionalism, move out of a community that they
have grown to love, and so on. They may also feel like his/her
dissertation will begin to define their professional identity.
They may feel like their research interests, their theoretical
influences, and his/her skill as a designer may all be evaluated
by this first piece of serious scholarship. |
